Yesterday was a wierd day. Vintage gathered at Southern Guilford Middle school for our second Sunday Worship Gathering with our Core Team. The day started off bad. From the beginning it seemed like we were jumping hurdles. But we pressed through and by the time everyone came together for worship, we were ready and focused.
The worship team led us in some great music and I was pumped to teach on the first piece of our vision. I stepped up, starting bringing it, got everything setup, and was about to hit the meat. Then the school fire alarm went off! The air conditioning shut down, doors started closing, and the most annoying beeping sound rang throughout the building. We exited just to be safe.
The fire department showed up and entered the school to investigate. After searching the building and finding nothing, the fireman exited the building. Thank goodness it was a false alarm. All was well. We were forced to wait outside for around thirty minutes.
By this point, I’m convinced the day was a wash. We had battled the obstacles all day, but this was one we couldn’t over come. What I had planned to teach on was too important to not have everyone completely engaged. So, Lyle led us in a couple songs and we wrapped.
I’m sure you thinking, what a waste. But you’re wrong!
Scott Murray, one of our core team members, pulled me aside. He told me he had a guy on his heart all week. A guy he had been feeling led to share Vintage with. The guy? The first fireman to show up at the school!! Scott grew up with this dude. He had been thinking for a while he’d be a great addition to a our core team, but had yet to call him. Then the dude shows up at Vintage. To add freaky to amazing, Jennifer (Scott’s wife), had just talked to this guy’s soon to be daughter-in-law yesterday morning. Crazy!
I take a couple things from yesterday:
1. God may have a totally different agenda than we do. We showed up thinking God wanted to communicated the first piece of his vision for Vintage. Instead, he wanted to introduce Vintage to a fireman. Stay tuned to see what happens.
2. We had a good chunk of our core team that wasn’t able to be there yesterday. I believe God knew the importance of what we were teaching and saw the need to postpone it.
Oh, the adventures of church planting. Fun stuff!
